Cahokia located near Collinsville, Illinois is one of only twenty UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the United States. It is the largest prehistoric earthen construction in the Americas north of Mexico. This site was first inhabited by Indians of the Late Woodland culture about AD 700 and grew during the following Mississippian period until the 1300s.
