May 30.—A somewhat low temperature has prevailedduring the last days of the month, favouring the formation ofthe pack-ice, and yesterday we were able, for the first time,to venture some distance over the ice of the Takingthe precaution of putting on skis, I set out with Besnard andLerebourg. The ice was firm, but unfortunately its surfacewas formed by the soldering together of all the ddbris oficebergs and floes which have choked the channel for the lastfew months.
