The current through the arc is adjusted by shunt- ^ I lifef- Individual Arc Panel 162 RAILWAY MECHANICAL EXGIXEER Vol. 91, No. 3 ing any desired portion of the main current around the regulation cluiracteristic of the arc is adjusted by a series-parallel resistance, which is patented. Provision is made in this system for stopping the arcwhenever the voltage in the arc exceeds the predeterminedvalue, which is adjusted to suit the work and the Motor Generator Set With Regulator This makes it impossible to draw a long arc and burn themetal. The arc is not broken when the welding operationis stopped, but is killed by a short circuit which is placedacross it. The number of arcs that can be connected inseries is limited only by the voltage, but up to the presenttime 12 is the maximum number for which machines areconstructed. RYERSON BOILER TUBE RECLAIMINGMACHINE The reclaiming of old boiler tubes has in the past beengiven very little consideration, due in general to the fact thatthe reclamation of old materials has only been taken upseriously by the railroad companies within the last few years. Since the railroads have stopped the practice of weldingseveral safe ends to flues, they are confronted with the problemof disposing of a large number of short tubes, which are ingood condition and can be used, provided they can be weldedtogether to make up the lengths required with not more thanone or two
