Cytoskeleton components, artwork. Three main components of the cytoskeleton, the internal support structure of a cell, are shown here. At top, the globular protein actin (orange) forms a microfilament, the thinnest of the filaments found in the cytoskeleton. At centre, intermediate filaments (red) are composed of a family of various proteins. The thickest of the filaments are the microtubules (green) at bottom, composed of the protein tubulin. The respective diameters in nanometres are actin filament (6), intermediate filament (10), microtubule (25). For their roles in a cell, see image C009/7406.
