This pavement is perfectly smooth,durable, noiseless, and without dust. Some of them,however, have proved very slippery when wet. Mostof the large cities have experimented with this kind ofpavement, and Chicago has 650 miles of Wood Block Pavement Brick Pavements. — Streets of brick paving areincreasing in number. They are largely used in Phila-delphia, the cities of Ohio and Illinois, and in manysmaller western cities and towns. Such streets offer asufficiently smooth surface, are easily repaired andcleaned, and are not very noisy. Asphalt Pavements. — Asphalt forms a very smoothand popular paving. Philadelphia has over 350 milesof it, and Buffalo over 200 miles. It is noiseless,easily cleaned, durable, easily repaired, and producesneither mud nor dust. It makes an excellent street foreither city or suburban districts. Broken Stone Streets. — The streets in the suburbs ofa city are often made of broken stone. They are easy THE CITY STREETS 219 for driving, comparatively noiseless, and of moderatecost. They are, however, muddy when wet, dustywhen dry, and are difficult to clean. Many of the parkroads and state roads are built of this material. Someof the smaller cities have fine stone or macadam roads.
