Hypnotism. Man undergoes hypnosis. Hypnosis is a trance-like state, characterised by extreme susceptibility to suggestion. Originally hypnosis was thought to be a form of sleep, but modern EEG measurements show no correlation between brain electrical activity during hypnosis and sleep. In subjects who respond strongly to hypnosis, hypnotherapy may be of use in helping subjects who suffer from panic attacks, extreme anxiety, phobias or those needing treatment from addictive habits (such as smoking). In psycho- therapy, hypnosis may enable patients to access repressed traumatic events in their past.
