Basilica and River Gave, Lourdes, 1930s. The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in the town of Lourdes, France, is a destination for pilgrimage. The sick are reputed to be miraculously healed by Lourdes water. In 1858, Bernadette Soubirous, a 14-year-old peasant girl, claimed to have seen a vision of the Virgin Mary here.
