The church at Plainville was erected, in 1881,on the corner of Broad and Pierce streets, and in1885* Father Walsh erected the priests home on thecorner of Broad and Canal streets, while in 1887 hepurchased the Catholic cemetery ground on Farm-ington avenue. In 1891-92 he erected, at a cost of$15,000, St. Matthews church at Forestville, whichdistrict has been added to his parish. Father Walshalso caused several improvements to be made, suchas the introduction of electric lights, in both thechurch and the priests house in Plainville. Father Walsh is a Democrat in his political pre-dilections. He was one of the original directors ofthe Free Public Library (which was installed in1896), being the first individual to bring the matterto the notice of the town, and to advocate the greatgood to be derived from such an institution. F. HOWARD ENSIGN, a well-known andhighly-respected citizen of East Hartford, is a na-tive of the place, born Jan. 3, 1855, and descendsfrom one of the oldest families in the county.
