Carpal tunnel syndrome treatment. Doctor marking out the wrist of a patient with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in preparation for a corticosteroid injection to reduce inflammation. CTS causes pain and numbness and tingling in the fingers and may extend up the arm. It occurs when swelling in the wrist presses on the median nerve where it passes through a gap in the wrist known as the carpal tunnel. Steroid injections are used for temporary relief while other courses of action are assessed. Surgery to loosen the transverse carpal ligament, known as carpal tunnel release surgery, may be necessary where there is constant numbness, muscle weakness or atrophy (muscle wasting).
