The tower, which is about 125 feet in height, contains alarge clock and chime of bells. The Hall was opened on the 15th June, 1893, and its totalcost was ;^42,3i7. Of churches and chapels in Maritzburg there are many ;the most notable, perhaps, being the Cathedrals of St. Petersand St. Saviours. Every other denomination is stronglyrepresented, and the style of building, together with theirinterior fittings, are sufficient evidence of the religious vitalityof the city. It may be interesting to mention here that the. -^m ZULU WAR 195 remains of that world-famed prelate, the Right Rev. J. , , formerly Lord Bishop of Natal, are reverentlylaid beside the altar of St. Peters Cathedral. Of monuments, Maritzburg possesses four artisticallydesigned and elaborately finished specimens. Opposite the Town Hall, at the corner of Church Streetand Commercial Road, a magnificent cluster of white marblefigures has been placed to commemorate the names of thosewho fell in the Zulu War. Near the Market Hall a columnhas been erected in honour of those volunteers who died inthe suppression of the Langalibalele Rebellion. In front ofthe Legislati\c .Asscmbl_\- Buildings there is a white marble statue of Her Majesty theQueen. This was erected tocommemorate the Jubilee\-ear of her gracious reign. A life-sized bust of SirBartle Frere, placed in thevestibule of the Town Hall,fittingly recalls the name andlife of one
