At the outbreak of war he was a Sergeant in U Company, 4th Battalion Gordon High-landers, and did much valuable work at Bedfordas musketry instructor. Crossing to France withthe Battalion in March 1915, he was shortlyafterwards promoted Company Sergeant August 1915 he received his commission andcame home on short leave.
