Neck scar. Close-up of a scar on the neck of a 30- year-old woman, 3 weeks after an operation to remove a branchial cyst. Sutures (stitches) used to close the incision have been removed leaving a thin line of scar tissue (at centre). The scar is likely to fade in time. Branchial disorders result from abnormal development of the branchial arches (ridges of tissue in the throat) in the embryo. A branchial cyst is a soft swelling, about 2 to 5 centimetres across, that appears in early adult life. The swelling contains a pus-like fluid rich in cholesterol.
