He studied law with JudgeFrederick Nash, Hillsboro, N. C,and was admitted to the bar in1834; i)racticed his profession inPetersburg. He was a Whig in politicsand purchased the Pelarahurg In-Icllingencer, the leading organ of theWhig party in southern conducted this paper until 1856when, at the earnest soUcitation ofleading Whig politicans of NorthCarolina, he purchased the RaleighRegister, an official Whig paper of Hon. He opposedsecession until it became an estabUshed fact, and then unhesitatingly gave hisallegiance to the South and bcame an active supporter of the cause. He repre-sented Petersburg in the State Legislatui-e. He resided in Raleigh imtil1864, when he returned to liis native town, where he resided until his began the publication of the Register in 1864; but was soon forced to sus-pend publication, owing to the city becoming the center of the military opera-tions. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the I. O. O. F. He was married April 10,1833, to IMary Cowan Modden of Petersburg,six children were born to them. JOHN W. TAPPAN. John W.
