The Greek lyric poet Sappho, who flourished in the early 6th century , was born on the Aegean island of Lesbos. While there is much legend about her, the facts are few. Only fragments of her verse survive, and they are classic examples of the pure love lyric, with its traits of strong expression of passion and perfect comtrol of meter.
