Plexiglass safety area at the entrance to reactor Unit 2 at Three Mile Island (TMI) nuclear plant near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA. TMI Unit 2 was severely damaged in an accident on March 28th 1979, when a loss of reactor cooling water resulted in the exposure of fuel rods, some of which melted, burned through the reactor chamber lining and sank to the floor of the reactor building. Here, a man wears a special radiation suit & mask to dress & monitor other personnel passing into and out of the contaminated reactor. In 1989, work had been in progress for 10 years & is expected to continue for another 30 years before completion.
