China: Emperor Guangwu (15 January 5 BCE - 29 March 57 CE), founder and first emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty (r. 5 August 25 - 29 March 57 CE). Illustration, c. 1498. Emperor Guangwu, born Liu Xiu and courtesy name Wenshu, was an emperor of the Han Dynasty, restoring the dynasty in 25 CE and thus was founder of the Later Han or Eastern Han Dynasty. Initially he ruled over part of China, but through the suppression and conquest of regional warlords, the whole of China was consolidated by the time of his death. He was a brilliant strategist, and was known for his decisiveness and mercy.
