Assorted vaccines, including the the HBvaxPRO vaccine (left), which protects against hepatitis B, and the MMR vaccine (right), which protects against measles, mumps and rubella. The glass syringe contains an influenza (flu) vaccine. Each vaccine contains inactivated extracts of the disease-causing virus or bacterium. When injected, the vaccine stimulates the body's immune system to produce antibodies, but without causing an infection. The immune system can then respond quickly against future infections by the virus or bacteria. The MMR vaccine is given to young children, while the hepatitis B and flu vaccines are only given to people at risk of infection.
