Hurricane Ivan over the western peninsula of Cuba, on 13th September 2004 at 1700 GMT. Mexico is at bottom left and Florida is top centre. Ivan is covering an area over 800 kilometres across. Hurricanes are enormous rotating storm systems in which winds can reach over 240 kilometres per hour (kph). They can cause immense damage if they hit built-up areas, but lose energy quickly over land. At the time this image was taken, Ivan was classified as a category 5 hurricane, the most severe rating. Ivan was moving at 15 kph, with winds of 260 kph at its core. Image taken by the MODIS instrument on board NASA's Aqua satellite.
