The desert of the Exodus : journeys on foot in the wilderness of the forty years' wanderings : undertaken in connexion with the ordnance survey of Sinai, and the Palestine exploration fund . evengrand. Crossing over by the caves to the mouth ofWiidy el Ain, we ascended a hill, to enjoy the viewand to sketch in some of the country round. Thereis a large open plain covered with scattered rangesof hills, at the debouchure of Wd,dy el *Ain andthe neighbouring valleys, but it does not (as theold maps make it) form a break in Jebel Magrdh;neither does Wady el Ain itself come downstraight from the heart of the mountain, for it takesa curve round an outlying block. As we proceed northward from this point, themarks of former cultivation become more and moreapparent at every step. The wady beds are embankedand laid out in fields, and dams are thrown acrossto break the force of and utilise the water. The hill-sides are covered with paths and terraces, and every-where there is some trace of ingenious industiy. Itwas clear that, though all around us was still baiTenand desolate, we were leaving the ancient desertbehind us, and entering upon the borders of theSouth Country. ??v^^w. 4^
