Fanad Head Lighthouse on the wild Atlantic coast of western Ireland, Fanad Head, Fanad Peninsula, County Donegal, Ireland

In December 1811 a Royal Navy frigate struck rocks near Fanad Head during a violent storm and over 250 lives were lost. Soon afterwards it was decided to build a lighthouse and in 1815 permission was granted with a budget of £2,000. The lighthouse was designed by George Halpin and was first lit on St Patrick's Day 1817. The tower was replaced with a taller more visible one and comenced operations in September 1886.
