Equipment Defects—Hand-Operated Con-trollers—Contacts, Fingers, Springsand Bases—II BY C. W. SQUIER, Renewable Contact Tips.—The ball of the contactfinger receives all the wear and burning due to makingand breaking the circuit and is the only part of thefinger that makes renewal necessary. In order to avoidscrapping the entire finger and contact spring whenthe contact portion of the finger becomes too worn, sev-eral types of renewable contact tips have been principal argument against the use of such tips istheir high first cost and the troubles that some of themhave given due to the loosening of the tip. One of the best and simplest renewable contact tipsis illustrated in the right-hand drawing. This con-sists of a standard section of half-round copper sotapped out that it can be screwed to the shank of the. Electric STANDARD CONTACT DETAILS FOR K-10 AND K-llCONTROLLERS finger. The tip is kept in place and is prevented fromturning by a small lip on the end of the finger positive lock washer is also used under the head ofthe screw to prevent it from loosening. The advantageof using a standard section of half-round copper is thatit can be obtained readily from most supply houses, thusmaking it unnecessary to send to the controller manu-facturers for the supply parts. This half-round copperis obtained in a long bar and can be cut off to corre-spond to the different widths of the fingers. It re-quires no machining of the contact tip other than thedrilling and tapping for the screw. This kind of tipalso provides a large section of metal to take the arcing, and the tips can be replaced in less time than is re-quired to replace an entire contact finger.
