Refugee village on stilts above water around Pulau Gaya in Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park nr Kota Kinabalu Sabah Malaysia

The islands and beaches of Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park (named after independent Malaysia's first president), are stunningly beautiful, and yet only a short boat ride from the city of Kota Kinabalu, state capital of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. However, the largest island, Pulau Gaya, is home to a ramshackle shanty town for people struggling on the margin, and which is said to be unsafe for outsiders to visit.
