Ecotron project. Artwork of a researcher inside one of the walk-in chambers of an Ecotron (controlled environment facilty) project. Such projects establish small plant, animal and microbial ecologies within a series of chambers. Climate conditions are controlled using computers, allowing more complex research to be carried out compared to laboratory or greenhouse experiments. Tubes control the air supply, and the soil conditions are also controlled. This is the European Ecotron, in Montpellier, France, opened in June 2010. Several other Ecotron projects have also been built elsewhere, including one in the UK.
