Consider-able ingenuity was exercised in adapting the capitals of thecolumns to the positions in which they were placed : thusin the hypostyle halls, the lofty central row of columnsgenerally had capitals of the form shown in Fig. 24, asthe light here was sufficient to illuminate thoroughly theunderside of the overhanging bell; but those columnswhich were farther removed from the light had their
