Excision of the Os Calcis.—An incision is made atthe level of the upper part of the bone, beginning at theinner border of the tendo-Achilles, dividing this tendonand passing around the back and outer surface of the footto the base of the fifth metatarsal bone; a short incision isthen made at the anterior end of the first incision andcarried down to the sole of the foot; the bone is exposedand held by forceps; the flap thus formed, which includesthe peronei tendons, is then separated from the bone, andthe cuboid ligaments are cut and also the interosseousligament between the os calcis and the astragalus, and thebone is removed with forceps. Resection of the Metatarsal Bones.—Any of themetatarsal bones may be resected by an incision on the Fig. Incision for resection of the metatarsal bone of the great toe. (Smith.) dorsum of the foot over the bone to be removed ; thebone is exposed, the extensor tendons being held aside byretractors; the bone is disarticulated at either end or iscut in its middle, and each fragment dissected up andremoved at its articulation. The metatarsal bone of thegreat toe is exposed by making a curved incision over thatbone on the inner side of the foot (Fig. 458). Excision of the Coccyx.—In excising the coccyx, thefinger is passed into the rectum and the position of the EXCISION OF THE UPPER JAW. 551 bone determined; a longitudinal incision through the skinand fibrous tissues covering the coccyx is made from apoint about a quarter of an inch above
