An army of more than 1,500,000 menis employed directly in the operation andmaintenance of the railroads in the United States, and millions of other men are furnished employ-ment indirectly in the mines, the forests and thefactories, supplying the railroads with approximatelyone and one-quarter billions of dollars worth ofmaterial and equipment annually consumed. These are wonderfully interesting and impres-sive facts; but the fact of greater interest and worthyof the most careful thought of every citizen of thiscountry is that this vast army of men engaged inproducing the commodity of transportation at anaverage cost more than 40 per Cent lower than isshown by any other country is paid an average wagemore than 50 per cent higher than is paid in anyother country where railroads exist.
