It is unfor-tunate that a painter of his capacity shouldnot have been selected as one of theOfficial War Artists, and should indeedhave had to wait until after the Armisticebefore having an opportunity of contribut-ing to the national records. Drafted to France in1916, he served with a cyclist company Arras sector, and was subsequentlytransferred to the Map Semce of the SixthCorps, many of the maps used in theBattle of Arras in 1917 being made underhis supervision. This years fair, held at theCrystal Palace early last month, was fromall accounts, a remarkable success from acommercial point of view, but we areafraid it cannot be said that in regard todesign as distinguished from purely tech-nical qualities, the goods displayed showedany marked improvement. With the ex-ception of a small minority our manufac-turers as represented at this fair wouldstill seem to lack a proper appreciation ofthe commercial value of good design, andto harbour the fallacy that because thepublic buy what is offered they would notbuy something
