The art of batting and base running To which is added the art of base running . nbatting, and ready to match strategic skill in hand-ling the ash against strategic pitching, point forpoint, and with a special object in view in makingevery hit. There are many points to Icnrn before abatsman can arrive at any marked degree of skill inhitting. First, he should learn the bearings of thenatural swing of the bat in meeting the ball, and thedifferent effect of a swift and a slow stroke in form-ing these bearings. Measuring the semi-circular lineof the swing of the bat from its position as it isheld over the shoulder, to the point of its meetingthe ball, it will be seen that the swiftness of thestroke has a great deal to do with giving directionto the ball. A slow stroke will meet the ball backof the base; a medium stroke will meet it on theline of the base, and a quick stroke in front of lines of these strokes are shown in the follow-ing diagram. The slow stroke would send the ball toward theright field; the medium stroke toward the center, THE ART OP BATTING. II. and the quick stroke to the left. So much for thelines of the forward swing of the bat against the ordi-nary si^eed of the delivery of the ball to the addition, however, the varying speed of the jDitchedball has to be taken into consideration, inasmuch as aslow pitched ball would meet the slow stroke on theline of the base instead of back of it; while a veryswiftly pitched ball would meet the swift stroke inthe same place, instead of in front of the base. Thepace of the ball, therefore, has to be taken into thecalculation in estimating the force of the forwardswing of the bat in giving the ball any special direc-tion. FACING FOR POSITION. One thing in the science of batting which has onlyof late years been understood, is the rule governing 12 THE ART OF BATTING.
