The Frontis engraving to Francis Bacon's 'Sylva sylvarum; or, A natural history in ten centuries. Whereto is newly added the History natural and experimental of life and death, or of the prolongation of life\. Published by Rawley after the authors death 1627. Bacon died after experimenting the preserving principles of ice and cold for this book. He caught pneumonia. The book itself contains 1000 experiments grouped in 10 groups of 100 (centuries). Some are copies of earlier works, others reveal the Baconian method. This frontis engraving (after a portrait) shows the tetragrammaton Adonay (my Lord) to remind readers not to utter the name of God (YHWH). Below is a quote from Genesis \"And God Saw the Light, that it was good\". Below that the globe with continents and \"The world of human knowledge\". It is poised between the Pillars of Hercules - the western limits of the ancient world."
