LYON, Warren Harvey, president ofthe South African Mission, was bornMay 7, 1870, in Salt Lake City,Utah, the son of Luther Peet Lyonand Elizabeth Harvey Baxter. When2 years old he moved with his parents to South Cottonwood (now Murray),Salt Lake Co., where he was baptizedAug. 21,1881, by James Peterson. Tak-ing an active part in Church activitiesfrom his earliest youth he was or-dained a Teacher Dec. 2, 1887, byThomas A. Wheeler, ordained a PriestJune 28, 1893, by S. Rawlins,and ordained an Elder Feb. 5, by Daniel B. Jones. In 189G (March31), he married Mary Etta Hansenof Mill Creek, Salt Lake County; shedied Dec. 22, 1902, leaving no June 2, 1903, he was ordained aSeventy by Brigham H. Roberts, andthe next day left Salt Lake City ona mission to South Africa, togetherwith Elders William R. Smith ofKamas, Summit Co., and George and Thomas L. Griffith ofAdamsville, Beaver Co., Utah. Ac-cording to appointment Elder Lyon,together with the other Elders named,opened anew the L. D. S. Mission inSouth Africa, Brother Lyon acting aspresident of the mission from June22, 1903, to April 27, 1906. Havingfilled a splendid and successful mis-sion, he returned to his home in Mur-ray in June, 1906.
