Biblical symbolism. 17th-century woodcut artwork showing the circles of the Earth's four elements (centre; earth, water, air and fire) and the heavens, including the Sun and Moon and the five known planets. The zodiacal aspects and symbols are shown, along with the outer celestial spheres. At left, Jacob's Ladder ascends to the Christian deity (here shown as the word Christ) at the top. The text is in Latin. Artwork from 'Circulus horologi lunaris et solaris' (1616), a work of mystical and biblical symbolism and study written by the Bohemian author Vaclav Budovec z Budova (1551-1621).
