Its career of only ayear has been had barely entered ac-tive service in 1862 whenit was transferred toHarpers Ferry. There itwas captured by Stone-wall Jackson on Sep-tember 15, 1862, and wasparoled the next day. Itsmilitary career was appar-ently cut short. It wasused, however, to guardConfederate prisoners atCamp Douglas, Chicago,until March 28, 186:5. InJanuary of that year, ithad been declared ex-changed and in the fallwas at length sent to New-Berne, North Carolina,where it was on duty inthe Newport Barracks tillJuly, 1864. There it en-gaged in various expedi-tions into the vicinity,destroying salt-works andcapturing the photograph herereproduced was taken.
