Camp Springs, Maryland 1-27-1981 Bruce Laingen shakes hands with Sec. of Def Caspar Weinberger after being greeted by Vice President George Bush, Speaker Tip O'Neil, Sec. Of State Al Haig and others. Laingen serving as the Charge d'affaires at the Embassy in Tehran, and 51 other hostages were released on January 20, 1981, following 444 days of captivity. Laingen remains the last American head of mission to Iran, as direct bilateral diplomatic relations between the two governments were severed following the seizure of the embassy and have not been restored.
