Portland Bill is a narrow promontory of Portland stone, jutting out into the English Channel, off the coast of Dorset. This lighthouse is the third to have been built here to protect passing shipping from the strong tidal race and dangerous shallow reefs which are just offshore. With its distinctive red and white stripes the current Portland Bill Lighthouse was built in1906 and stands 35 metres (115 ft) high.
