Sometimes the number of leaflets is but three, andthe leaf becomes pinnately trifoliate, (Fig. 54,) and is readilydistinguished by having the two lateral leaflets attachedto the petiole at some distance below its apex, as in thecommon Garden Bean. Such a leaf may even be reducedto a single leaflet, as in the Orange. 54.
