A street scene in Dubai in 1977. The oil wealth of the Emirate began in the late 1960s. It would make a big difference starting in the 1970s, turning Dubai into a global state and city. Here high-rise buildings are going up along the waterfront. Quaintly, a British-style Belisha beacon at a pedestrian crossing is part of the street furniture although people appear to prefer to cross the road further along.

Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the capital of the Emirate of Dubai. Located in the eastern part of the Arabian Peninsula on the coast of the Persian Gulf, Dubai is considered the business and financial hub of Western Asia. It is also a major global transport hub for air passengers and freight. Oil revenue, beginning in the late 1960s, helped accelerate the development of the city, which was already a major trading centre since the early 20th century. This image is from an old colour transparency taken by an amateur photographer. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1970s photograph.
