A good one, whichis now being attached to a greatmany X-ray bulbs and valve tubes,is that introduced by Bauer (seeFig. 41, page 46). These tubes arecapable of regulation from a dis-tance, a length of rubber tubingbeing attached to the air valve, while at the other end is a small hand-pump. By compressing the latter,a small quantity of air is allowed to pass into the interior of the tube. Thislowers the vacuum. This is a good method for the regulation of X-ray andvalve tubes, but requires careful manipulation to ensure efficient construction of a valve tube and the method of arranging one or 18. Pig. I9i.—Triple valve tube (C. Andrews). 274 RADIATION THERAPEUTICS more in the circuit has been described in the section on radiography. Whathas been said there applies equally to the therapeutic outfit. With thisas with all forms of regulators it is important that it should not be used toofrequently or too vigorously. The vacuum is easily disturbed and the valvetube becomes too variable for easy control. The most convenient mercury interrupter is probably a mercury jetinterrupter. There are several which are all equally good. It should bepossible to control the speed ; a resistance should, therefore, be added forthe control of the interrupter. Another resistance is necessary to regulatethe amount of current passing through the primary. Figs. 198 and 199 represent convenient arrangements for treatmentoutfit. The coil, spintermeter, valve tube, and milliamperemeter are placedon the top of an upright cabinet. The leads from the secondary may be carried to a pair of insulated high-te
