Malay Peninsula and Borneo. In my former account of this species I included among itssynonyms the P. coccinea of Eyton. There seems to be a slightdifference between individuals from Malacca and Borneo. Ihave specimens before me from both localities. The Borneanbird has the black on the forehead of a greater width, and itscolours are generally brighter, the blue stripe behind the eyebeing somewhat lighter. The general appearance of the bird, however, is the same, and I do not think they should be sepa-rated as distinct. There is no difference in size, and it requiresa very nice discrimination to discover characters which wouldbe sufficient to make two species of them. I therefore still re-tain P. coccinea (fig. 3) of Eyton as a synonym of P. granatina(fig. 4) ; the heads of both being represented Fig. 3. § Erythropitta. 17. Brachyurus erythrogastra, Temm. PI.
