Theactivities of Baltimore privateers caused a loss of $16,000,000to the British. The most famous privateersman was Captain Thomas Boyle,of Baltimore. First on the Comet, and later on theChasseur, known as the Pride of Baltimore, he made anumber of brilliant captures and had hair-breadth the Comet he seized twenty-nine vessels. TheChasseur is said to have lowered the colors of fifty-one Britishships. Commodore Joshua Barney, commanding the Rossie,accompanied by six other privateers, sailed from Baltimore in 17. To the Dash, ofBaltimore, belongs the credit for the first capture made by aprivateer. She took the British schooner Whiting, withdispatches from Great Britain to the United States, in Hamp-ton Roads July 10, 1812.
