Was engaged in freighting across the plains for severalyears. At the breaking out of the civil war he was in command of anindependent company, which entered the state service, C. S. A., division. They were engaged in the battles of Carthage, Wil-sons Creek, Drywood and Lexington. Capt. Withers was captured atSpringfield and taken to St. Louis, thence to Alton, where he was detainedfor eight months and then paroled. His company was disbanded in W. is an active and consistent member of the Baptist church, and aman honored and respected by all. ELI ADAMS.
