In the neck of the latter is situated thebeautiful Cor Caroli, or Charless Heart, a white starof about the second magnitude. It is the leading starof the constellation, and was named Cor Caroli byHalley, the Astronomer Royal, at the suggestion ofSir Charles Scarborough, the Court physician, inmemory of Charles I. Cor Caroli is a wide double star, having a sixth-magni-tude companion of a pale lilac colour, and is an easyobject for very small instruments. It can be readilyfound by drawing an imaginary line from Polaristhrough Alioth in Ursa Major, which will lead directlyto it. It forms an equilateral triangle with the starsPhad and Alcaid in Ursa Major, and is also one of thefour stars forming the Diamond of Virgo. It comesto the meridian at 9 on May Mount Wilson.
