CHERRIES. The cherry is one of the finest and most delicate dessert fruits. The acid varieties are also highly esteemed for preserving and cooking purposes. Although a very perish- able fruit, the period of its use may be pro- longed to two months by a proper selection of varieties. The trees thrive well in any soil which is sufficiently well drained, but will not succeed a long time where the sub- soil is wet. Our cherry trees are all budded on the Mahaleb Stock, which makes a healthy tree, and does not sprout from the roots, which is a nuisance, when common Morello Stocks are used.—Those marked with a f are sweet sorts. Plant 18 ft. apart each way—ijj trees to the acre. PRICES. Two years from bud, 5 to 6 feet, select. Each, 50 cts.; per 10, $; per 100, $ Two years from bud, 4 to 5 feet, medium. Each, 35 cts.; per 10, $; per 100, $ fAbbesse (Sweet Duke) -Large, dark red, delicious; almost equal to the Heart Cherries. Very hardy, more so than other Dukes, a more vigorous grower and heavier cropper. Royal Duke—Said to be more valuable than May Duke, hardier and more fruitful, ripens evenly; gone before May Duke. Large, roundish oblate, pale amber, mottled bright red, tender, juicy, rich, nearly sweet. Ostheimer (Weichsel) — Large, heart-shaped, almost black when ripe, full of purple juice, exceedingly rich, less acid than English Morello; good for dessert and unsurpassed for kitchen uses. Very hardy both in tree and fruit bud, blooms late, and even young trees bend under their weight of fruit with unfailing regularity.
