Royal Institution Christmas Lecture, 1961. The Christmas Lectures for children have been held annually since 1825 at the Royal Institution, London, UK. The 1961 lectures, titled 'Electricity', were presented by British physicist Sir William Lawrence Bragg (1890-1971). Bragg is shown next to two red spheres that are being charged with static electricity by his assistant. Bragg and his father (William Henry Bragg) discovered the diffraction of X-rays by crystals, sharing the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1915. William Lawrence Bragg worked and lectured at the Royal Institution from 1953. This painting, by British artist Terence Cuneo (1907-1996), dates from 1962.
