In a few cases it has been rotated about the verticalaxis so that one condyle presented in thepopliteal space, in others about a transverseaxis so that the surface of separation wasdirected backward. The knee-joint is not often involved, butsometimes the capsule is torn and the jointfilled w^ith blood and exudate. In a large proportion of cases the injuryhas been compound, the loAver end of theshaft projecting through the skin on theside or in the popliteal space. The pop-liteal vessels have been torn or, more fre-quently, so pressed upon that circulationwas interrupted or seriously one case a popliteal aneurism appearedseveral years later and was attributed tothe accident.
