Lillie (1915) shows that in New Zealand, at the Bay of Islands, the northern migra- tion takes place in the last half of April, May, and the first half of June. There is a slack period in the whaling from July to September: after the middle of September the south- ward migration takes place, and continues through October and November. He also states that the period July to September, when Humpbacks are absent from New Zea- land waters, used to be the busy time for the whalers at Norfolk Island.
