Cumberland, the county seat, located about the center of the county, on theFarmville and Powhatan railroad, has shown considerable improvement in thepast two or three years, in the establishment of a tobacco warehouse and stem-mery, both of which are to be enlarged and others 119 Cartersville, on James river, is a thriving town of about 200 inhabitants, at whichmuch of the tobacco of the county is bought, and is a principal shipping pointfor its products. Several smart villages have recently sprung into importance, while with newsettlers coming in and old ones improving their farms, much improvement isobservable, and the general outlook for the county is very promising. Its altitudeis 474 feet. DICKENSON COUNTY. Dickenson was formed in the year 1880 from the counties of Wise, Buchananand Russell, and named in honor of William J. Dickenson. It is situated in theextreme western section of the State. Its altitude is 1,800 feet. The cilmate is healthful and invigorating, the average temperature being F., rainfall, The soil varies in texture, but is principally sandy. The county contains an area of 324 square miles, 313,597 acres. It has 700farms averaging in size 225 acres each. Lands range in price from $ to $50
