This co-operation of knowledge and work was not only necessitated bythe magnitude and comprehensiveness of a book covering a period of four hun-dred years and embracing all the aspects,—historical, religious, industrial, social, and intellectual,—of the nations life, but was deliberately chosen because it en-sured greater variety, interest, and thoroughness than any single author could givesuch a work. Its advantages were recognized as counterbalancing the additionalexpense involved. We have, however, planned the entire work, and, with theexception of the chapters which are signed by their writers, have outlined andthoroughly revised every part we have not ourselves written, thus securingunity of aim and purpose throughout.
