In 1859, a mannamed Drake drilled thefirst oil well, and soonPennsylvania was produc-ing millions of barrels ofoil a year. In time thesupply diminished andricher fields were dis-covered in western gas, associatedwith the oil, was discov-ered later, and gave risein particular to the plateglass industry in Pitts-burgh. Two thirds of the plate glass produced by this countryis made in Pennsylvania. The oil district is in the north-western part of the state and much of the population there.
