A Wanderung is a public right of way through and up a mountain All though directly translated Wandern means to wander in German, the word actually means to hike. Wandern is a very popular summer pastime for Germans. The most popular destination to wandern is in the Bavarian and Austrian Alps. The Alps are a group of mountains in southern Europe stretching across 1,200 kilometres. The mountain range was created by the collision of two tectonic plates (the african and Eurasian plates). Countries that have the Alps as part of their geography, called Alpine countries, include Austria, Slovenia, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, France, Italy and Monaco. Bavaria is an independent state in southern Germany. Once it's own country the Bavarians are very proud of their traditions and culture. Bavaria is a very popular tourist destination for both Germans and foreigners alike. Munich is the capital of Bavaria and hosts the world famous yearly beer festival known as the Oktoberfest (local known as the Wiesn, meaning meadow in German). Bavaria is the largest state in Germany. Germany is a country situated in central Europe and is considered to be one of the leading powers in the European union. Historically, Germany has always been a leader in both technical and cultural terms. Germany, as it exists today is a relatively new country formed in 1871. Before that Germany only existed as a group of Germanic tribes and was concurred and occupied by both the Romans and French. Germany has one of the worlds largest economies and is a federal parliamentary republic. Germany has the Euro for it's currency and is one of the pivotal powers in the European Union. along with France and the United Kingdom.
