Trough querns & a pounding stone in the courtyard of the Benie Hoose Late Neolithic house at Pettigarths Field settlement, Whalsay, Shetland. The house was stripped of peat & excavated 1954-5 by Calder: pottery & 1800 large stone tools including hammerstones, pounders, discs & 33 querns were recovered. There are two worn trough querns & a rounded pounder (mouler) centre, a piece of quern on the wall rear R & other scattered fragments. The querns & moulers were used to grind grains & other foodstuffs & to smash up raw materials; under constant heavy use they wore away and broke.
